African Americans have played an integral role in the development of the culture, education and economics of the state.
North Carolina was one of only a handful of states that had not yet honored the African American experience with a public monument.
North Carolina Freedom Park has already received a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects Triangle Section for the project’s design. We are also proud to have become a part of The Mellon Foundation's Monuments Project in 2025.
Our Vision
North Carolina Freedom Park offers a place for school children, visitors, residents, citizens, and policymakers to learn about and reflect on the contributions of African Americans to our history. Every visitor is welcome to share in the experience of this monument and be reminded of the importance of freedom for every citizen and the sanctity of justice and equality for all.
